Sunvil - New Image for 2009

Long-established tour operator Sunvil Holidays has now re-branded to become simply "Sunvil", and is about to embark on a seasonal advertising campaign to promote the new brand and its range of holiday brochures.

Under the slogan 'Find the Real Country', Sunvil now works on three major areas : Sunvil Holidays for Greece and Cyprus (destinations which Sunvil has long made their own) ; Sunvil Discovery for destinations such as Italy, Portugal, Romania and Scandinavia; and Sunvil Traveller, which was formerly known as Sunvil Latin America, for longhaul products - an indication of the expansion which Sunvil has made to its offerings for the long-haul holidaymaker.

This is the first major refresh of the Sunvil brand in 35 years, and will be backed up by Travel Channel advertising, in UK national newspapers, magazines and on Classic FM radio station.

These promotions do not focus on discounts and offers, but reflect the established remit of the company, to offer an authentic holiday experience for the discerning traveller - hence headings headings such as 'the real Cyprus' at: http://www.sunvil.co.uk/

Winter Solstice Celebrations East & West

Hundreds of druids, pagans and tourists will no doubt brave the fog and cold at Stonehenge at sunrise this weekend to celebrate the winter solstice, which of course marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year.

The drive to mark these seminal moments in the calendar of the Earth is of course deeply embedded into the psyche on mankind, and the simple Stonehenge gathering is a microcosm of festivals and observances all over the planet, which mark the moment which point once again to longer days, heralding rebirth and a renewed future.

In 7th Century Japan for example, festivals marked the re emergence of the sun godess Amaterasu (or Amateras), from her seclusion in a cave. Aspects of this tradition have continued to this day on New Years Eve in the country.

In East Asian countries, the Dōngzhì Festival or The Winter Solstice Festival or The Extreme of Winter is one of the most important festivals, and is celebrated in various incarnations in China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam and elsewhere in the Far East. During the Dongzhi solar term on or around December 21, sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest.

The origins of this festival can be traced back to philosophies of balance and harmony in the cosmos, epitomised by the concept on Yin and Yang. After this celebration, days will be longer with an increase in daylight hours and commensurate increase in positive energy flow.

Of course in the West, and globally in the modern era, the theme of rebirth is melded with the Christian tradition of the advent of God in human form, born at the dark time of the year to bring light into the world and signify new life and the renewed possibiliy to connect mankind back to creation. The event is observed on December 25, which was the winter solstice at the time the Julian Calendar was established.

Ten Great Reasons for a Holiday in Italy

Italy offers fabulous art and architecture in awe-inspiring cities and fascinating little towns, a glorious variety of countryside and coastline, and some of the finest food and wine served anywhere. You can meet friendly, civilised people and you can easily spend your entire annual clothing budget on designer clothes at bargain prices. All that and Puccini opera under the stars. Holiday bliss!”

Here are 10 excellent reasons to consider a holiday in Italy:

Beaches: You’ll find well-maintained sandy beaches at traditional resorts on the Adriatic coast and in Tuscany. Sardinia is also a bather’s paradise with some classy hotels. For quieter beaches, consider Sicily or Puglia.

Nightlife: Clubbing hotspots include Rome and lively university centres such as Milan. Rimini is among resorts with a party atmosphere. Something more restrained? There’s opera everywhere, including Verdi festivals in Verona and Puccini in Torre del Lago, Tuscany.

Food: Try the delicious regional cuisine. Hearty game and other rustic specialities are enjoyed in the north, while the south is best-known for its seafood and vegetable dishes. Bologna is regarded as the country’s gastronomic capital.

Wine: Italy cultivates more grape varieties than anyone else and almost every region produces memorable wines. Reds include Tuscany’s popular Chianti and Piedmont’s robust Barolo, while Verdicchio and Gavi are among distinctive whites.

Art: The land of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci reputedly has 60% of the world’s most important works of art – and half of these are in Florence. Galleries in every main city display stunning Renaissance works and many, such as the Guggenheim in Venice, have eminent modern collections.

Cities: Places like Rome and Florence offer a wealth of art and history and the big-city attractions of excellent restaurants, entertainment and shopping. Venice is a must for romantics – and check out smaller cities such as Lucca in Tuscany, or Orvieto in Umbria.

Nature: Enjoy the fabulous scenery and wildlife of the national parks, such as those in Abruzzo and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Sicily has two parks and Mount Etna to explore. If you’re mountain-minded, try inland Sardinia or head north into the Alps.

History: There’s no escaping Italy’s rich heritage. Rome launched an empire, Venice was one of the world’s great commercial and maritime centres, and virtually everyone – from the Greeks and Byzantines to the Normans – left their mark on Sicily.

Shopping: Fashionistas head for Milan, but most cities have stores selling the latest from Prada, Armani and Versace. Bargains can be found in designer outlets, particularly in Tuscany, and at street markets around the country.

Touring: Popular routes take in the medieval hill-towns of Tuscany or Umbria, and the lesser-known rural delights of Puglia, the ‘heel’ of Italy.

A holiday in Italy can be considered at any time of the year, and with continuous availability of bargain flights to Italy, there has never been a better time to explore this great county.

As of December 1 2008, travellers returning to the UK from outside the European Union will be able to bring back double the amount of wine, electrical goods and souvenirs before tax.

New EU regulations, changed for the first time in 15 years, mean that travellers can bring four litres of wine (up from two) duty-free and the allowance for other goods, including electrical products and souvenirs, is increased to £300 (from £145). Antarctic and Latin America Cruises - Which Operator?

Major cruising programmes around Central and South America are offered by such companies as Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean - two of the biggest names in cruise holidays.

Among the fine offerings of Princess Cruises, are several itineraries which sail up the Amazon river. Royal Caribbean meanwhile, has three, four and six-night cruises around Brazil for those who want to mix their cruise with extended hotel stays at other locations, including of course, Rio. They also offer longer cruise itneraries, in tandem with sister company Celebrity Cruises , including 14-night trips.

It is possible in many cases, to embark from US ports, while others start off from major South American cities such Buenos Aires, Santiago and Rio.

What are the main attractions for such cruises? Well, amongst the huge diversity of this continent, you can focus on the cosmopolitan excitement of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, or fabulous natural wonders such as the Galapagos islands, Chilean fjords and the Andes.

Meanwhile, for the adventurous, and those looking for an ultimate cruise experience, there can be fewer destinations than the Antarctic to conjure up intrigue and excitement.

Most commercial trips to Antarctica start from the southern Argentine port of Ushuaia, and many niche operators such as Swan Hellenic, Voyages of Discovery and Hurtigruten offer expedition-style Antarctica programmes. Upmarket lines such as Regent Seven Seas and Silversea Cruises also offer breathtaking itineraries and a high degree of care.

Fear of Flying Means Great Photos of David Bowie

rock music photography /

London-based Rockarchive has released eleven previously unseen images of David Bowie taken by his friend and touring companion, Geoff McCormack.

Throughout the touring years of 1973-1976 Bowie wouldn't fly so the pair of old childhood school friends circumnavigated the world by ship, train and land. The extensive time spent travelling and the methods used meant Geoff had unique opportunities to collect photographic memories of the tours with Bowie.

Meanwhile for the Christmas season, Rockarchive's London galleries will be stocking a selection of gifts to meet the budget of all rock fans. For a few pence you can buy a postcard, for a few pounds a greetings card, poster, collectable mug, cushion, lamp or t-shirt. The first Rockarchive Magazine is also available, numbered and embossed in an edition of just 1000. Many of these items are available online in early December 2008.

Boarding Cards Becoming a Thing of the Past

Both Lufthansa and BMI have introduced new technology which will mean there is no need for the old fashioned paper boarding card. The new technology sends a bar code to the passenger’s mobile phone. It thus enables them to pass through security checkpoints and straight to the departure gate. A scanner can read the bar code wherever required.

The passenger siimply has to download the bar code from the airlines website. The service is already working on all Lufthansa services from Heathrow to Europe and will shortly be rolled out to all other UK airports. BMI have been using the technology on services from Heathrow to Edinburgh and Manchester to Belfast City and the airline will shortly announce how it is rolling this out to its other routes and airports.

In America Continental Airlines has been using similar technology since March this year on selected routes.

Free Parking at Blackpool Airport

Passengers travelling from Blackpool Airport will soon be able to park at the terminal for free - but a £10 charge to fly out will be imposed.

The Airport Development Fee, payable at the airport, will be introduced for departing passengers over the age of 16 from 5 January. The fee will go towards a £2m investment project to upgrade the runways, facilities and capacity. It will also relieve the pressure felt by local residents who have suffered from airport users parking in their streets.

Under the new scheme, parking will be free for up to 15 days.

An alternative, especially for those on early or late flights, is to have a Blackpool Airport Hotel package, which can include free parking for the duration of the time away. Websites such as Airport Parking Offers have such arrangements available to book online.

Moscow Airport Lounge by Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines has opened a new business lounge at the Moscow Domodedovo Airport in Russia. According to the airline, the new lounge has around 500sqm of floor space. Guests can use wireless LAN, fax machines, internet, computers, printers and copiers free of charge.

When you book an airport lounge you can relax before your flight, with up to 3 hours in a calm atmosphere making the most of the complimentary drinks and snacks on offer. Additionally, many lounges have wifi-connections and give you free newspapers and magazines.

Such facilities were once thought of as an expense-account luxury, but in recent years the benefits have been understood by a large number of regular travellers, whether on business or holidays, singles, couples and families included.

Croatia Holidays in Focus

Hotel Bookings
The Croatian National Tourist Office is reporting that many visitors are now choosing the country for a really authentic Mediterranean experience on the fine Adriatic Coast. These visitors are also discovering the medieval hilltop villages in the country's Istria region, and the green hinterland of Dalmatia as well as the country's established important National Parks. Everywhere, the country offers a variety of holiday ideas for those looking for a beach, but also want to be active on holiday. Here are a few of the highlights of a holiday in Croatia.

A popular option for visitors who want an all-round introduction to the culture of the country, is a two-centre holiday starting in the capital Zagreb. Zagreb is a great cultural centre with a fine mix of museums, theatres, shops and parkland, and with less than 2 hours flying time from southern UK airports, is a popular arrival point.

A few days here can be combined with a longer stay at the well-known Kvarner Riviera, but also for example at the upcoming north-eastern region of Slavonia which has the Kopa ki Rit nature reserve (ideal bird-watching territory) and acres of wine-producing landscape where excellent local wines match heartily with local cuisine. Exciting to see also are the Lipizzaner horses of Djakovo. For hikers and cyclists, the mountains of Gorski Kotar in the north offer great opportunities. Europe's last great mammal - the brown bear - can be seen here. Also in this region are the islands of Losinj, Krk, Rab and Cres where the rare griffon vulture flies in beautiful unspoilt scenes.

The Dalmatian coast is probably the best-known area of Croatia, but now for UK visitors, new direct flights to Zodar mean that the northern areas of the Dalmatian coast are more accessible, including the amazing Kornati archipelago which is a National Park with all amenities, and is a gateway to five of Coatia's eight such parks. Many special interest operators are now offering new inland programmes, including food and wine tours, bird watching trips as well as historical and cultural tours to all such regions.

With new motorways completed, and with regular year-round flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to Zagreb by Croatia Airlines amongst others, those with a few days to spare and an independent spirit can easily hire a car and be in Croatia's Kvarner Riviera resorts less than 2 hours from landing. Indeed hiring a car and enjoying a leisurely, independent view of Croatia's varied landscapes is a choice which is growing in acceptance as the country opens up once again to its new waves of visitors.

Meantime, as Croatia is outside the Eurozone, UK holidaymakers are likely to find excellent self-catering deals, and excellent value in restaurants and bars, where spending-money goes a lot further than in Eurozone Mediterranean areas.

Germany Holidays: Taking a New Look

If you have not considered a holiday in Germany before, you should expect to be enticed and amazed by what is on offer. Germany is year-round holiday destination, with fine cities for Autumn and Winter cultural breaks, the famous German Christmas Markets, music, beer and wine festivals, spa holidays, summer river cruising plus of course alpine scenes for family summer holidays and winter skiing.

As well as its amazing scenery, including the breathtaking Rhine and Moselle rivers, Germany has a fascinating history and wide range of cultural events. The Italian Renaissance painters were discovered, for example, by a young Albrecht Durer, who brought their influence to Northern Europe via the fine mediaeval town of Nurnberg. The Reformation had its toots in Germany through the revolutionary thinking of men such as Martin Luther, and of course the evolution of printing also had roots in the country. So if you are planning a European holiday with a difference, Germany's cultural history alone is well worth taking a look.

Germany is a country of diversity - beautiful sandy beaches of North Germany, the forested valleys and mountain ranges in the centre, Theme Parks and Rivers in the West and the mountains in the south which offer ideal surroundings for all kinds of sports and activities.
However, it is in Germany's revived and regenerated cities that you will find vitality and fascination. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Dresden, for example, have big differences in terms of location and political history, but are united in offering a great welcome and perfectly organized tours and excursions for visitors.

Berlin has a little of everything, incorporating International flair and provincial charm, and is warm-hearted in its welcome and wildly uninhibited. Since the decadent 1920's, and many years as an island of western ideals cut off by the communist wall, long gone now, Berlin holds a fascination few other cities can claim. Berlin's night life is second to none. And in the past decade, the city has seen amazing new architectural developments springing up everywhere.
Hamburg is Famous as the city where the Beatles developed their style and perfected their "beat". But much more than this, Hamburg is a vibrant harbour and dockland city offering the visitor a stimulating mix of shopping, night life and green parks. Added to this, the Aster Lakes offer a surprising mellow hinterland of peace and relaxation. Hamburg's Sunday morning fish market is a great focus on any city tour.

By contrast away from the sea, Munich is in the landlocked state of Bavaria, where towering alpine mountains are a short drive away. The city has a wealth of cultural, gastronomic and architectural attractions, but is probably most famous for its festivals, in particular the annual Oktoberfest Beer Festival. However, culture seekers and shoppers are equally well provided for, and Munich's museums are amongst the world's finest, including the splendid Nymphenburg Palace, which is not to be missed.

Finally Dresden, located to the east of Germany and reborn from the ashes of terrible events in World War 2, the city is an architectural jewel, along the banks of the River Elbe and the gently rolling landscape. Well worth seeing are the Dresden Frauenkirche Church, the striking baroque dome - which dominates the city centre - the superb palatial buildings surrounding the Theaterplatz and Brühl Terraces as well as the many art treasures in the many museums.

East Midlands Airport UK - Flying With Great Holiday Ideas

Keeping up its commitment to building holiday opportunities, without the hassle of long car journeys to international "hub" airports in the south or northwest of England, the UK's East Midlands Airport continues to offer plenty of choice for the holidaymaker on a short break or a longer holiday.

One example is Beauvais near Paris, where cheap flights from the airport can cost as litlle as £10.00. Beauvais is a town brimming with culture, with many museums, sporting events and festive happenings, it's the perfect city break. And of course, it is easy to get to Paris and enjoy the highlights there too - one of the most famous city break destinations and a perfect treat for that someone special.

Other city break ideas include Irish holidays to locations such as Knock, located in County Mayo in southern Ireland, one of the most picturesque counties. With its breathtaking craggy coastline, interspersed with sandy beaches and charming villages, its charm will undoubtedly leave you wanting more. Or perhaps you might try the vibrant city of Belfast in Northern Ireland.

A great traditional winter idea to please all the family would be a trip to Lapland to see Father Christmas. East Midlands Airport actually has day trip to Lapland - which includes a guaranteed private family meeting with the great man himself. But it is also possible, of course, to enjoy a comforting stay in small, cosy, friendly family run hotels as well as participating in a range of arctic activities, such as reindeer, husky and snowmobile safaris.
But further afield, also flying from East Midlands, a fantastic winter sun idea would be a trip The Gambia in West Africa. With the tour operator The Gambia Experience, you can escape the British winter for under £300 for a week.

Just 6 hours from the UK, The Gambia, known as the Smiling Coast will give you a warm welcome. The former British colony offers a tropical experience, friendly English speaking locals, exotic culture and almost unbroken sunshine from November right through to April The Gambia boasts temperatures of over 30 degrees C, plus stretches of uncrowded sandy beaches, a wide range of restaurants and a variety of accommodation, making it the perfect winter sun destination.

Or even further afield, it is possible to fly from East Midlands Airport to exotic Mexico, sizzling with sunshine and burning with Spanish party passion. With great weather, fabulous food and a vibrant nightlife, Mexico really can be seen as the ultimate holiday destination. There is much to explore in Mexico from the desert sands and Mayan ruins to the jungle and its two coastlines.

Thus East Midlands, along with other UK regional airports, are continuing to push hard to keep variety, value and choice alive at times when the economic challenges for holidaymakers and businesses are clear.
