Boarding Cards Becoming a Thing of the Past

Both Lufthansa and BMI have introduced new technology which will mean there is no need for the old fashioned paper boarding card. The new technology sends a bar code to the passenger’s mobile phone. It thus enables them to pass through security checkpoints and straight to the departure gate. A scanner can read the bar code wherever required.

The passenger siimply has to download the bar code from the airlines website. The service is already working on all Lufthansa services from Heathrow to Europe and will shortly be rolled out to all other UK airports. BMI have been using the technology on services from Heathrow to Edinburgh and Manchester to Belfast City and the airline will shortly announce how it is rolling this out to its other routes and airports.

In America Continental Airlines has been using similar technology since March this year on selected routes.
