US Embassy: ESTA required from January 12

Travellers may be aware that the USA has changed its entry procedures for travellers to the USA under the Visa Waiver Program (which includes UK passport holders) and has introduced ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). This programme becomes mandatory on January 12 2009 and visitors will need to complete the ESTA form online at least 72 hours before they travel.

Application is free of charge, it takes about 15 minutes and most applicants receive a positive response in seconds. The US Embassy warns that unauthorised third parties have set up websites which charge for information and submitting ESTA applications and that there is no advantage to be gained by using these.
